*How to Apply Patches to Clothing Iron patches would have a layer of plastic backing with a thin layer of heat activated glue on the back of it. You should keep the plastic backing on the patches even if you are sewing them on. They help keep the embroidery together. Embroidered patches can be applied to clothing either by sewing it around the edges or by heat pressing it on with an Iron. Some fabrics such as leather (including suede) will scorch from the applied heat of the iron. You must stitch the patches to leather and do not iron on patches to leather or nylon material. *HOW TO SEW ON PATCHES ON CLOTHING To hand sew patches you’ll need a needle and thread. First, place the patch on the material where you want it to go and attach with pins to keep the patch stable. Next, do a basic running stitch around the edge of the patch. If your material and patch are very thick you may need to pull the needle all the way through the back of the material and then pull it back through the front instead. We recommend using a thimble .
