The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced on 11 March 2020 that the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can be characterized as a pandemic. Describing the situation as a pandemic means that the epidemic has spread to several countries, continents or throughout the world, and that it affects large numbers of people.
